Last Saturday five members of our newly formed MC Scow fleet joined the Flying Scots for a great day of racing on the bay! With light winds out of the East, Jeff Nicholas caught all the shifts and scored two bullets. Good job Jeff! Mark Grinder was hot in pursuit in both races with two second place finishes. Thanks to Team Leprechaun from the Scot Fleet for performing RC duties.
Congrats to Dave Pedersen on his recent purchase of hull 1278! This brings us up to seven boats on the yard. If you are interested in joining in on the fun, there are several reasonably priced boats for sale on the MC site at www.mcscow.org.
So much to do and so little time! There is local racing with the Flying Scots again this Saturday, Jan 12th. Lake Eustis has club races on the Jan 19-20 and twice a month throughout the season. Eustis hosts three big regattas throughout the year with the MC Midwinter’s drawing upwards of 70 talented competitors! For those wishing to improve their skills, Melges holds a two day racing clinic prior to the Midwinter’s. Check out their program at www.lescfl.com.
But best of all, one design racing is growing in Sarasota! There is no better place to hone your skills than in a competitive fleet of equally matched boats. For me, the MC Scow was the logical choice. Melges’ little rocket ship is great fun to sail, there’s plenty of competition nearby, and I didn’t have to rob the kid’s college fund to buy one. Oh, and did I mention that I’m actually spending more time sailing my boat? I can launch the MC and go for an afternoon sail all in the time it took me to get my led sled in the water. Simple is good!
In the end, it’s all about building our Squadron’s one design program. If this style of racing grabs your interest, I would highly encourage you to check out the MC. Other options in Sarasota that I have experience with are the E-Scows and Flying Scots. Both of these fleets have a strong following and are great fun to sail with. I’ve also heard rumors that a Laser fleet and a Viper 640 fleet are in our future! If you would like more information on the MC Scow, feel free to give me a call at 941-914-0516.
