The 2013 Independence Regatta is history. The Firecracker 400 Pursuit Race had 4 divisions. Spinnaker was won by Peer Pressure (Dave Hillmyer), Non Spinnaker by White Hawk (Bob Miller), Cruising by Y Knot (Patrick Trovatore), and Fun Fleet by a Nacra 5.0 ( Laurel Kaiser). The conditions were quite good given the previous monsoon we had been experiencing for many days. Winds from the south-east at 12-14 most of the race and no rain. The Poker Run was postponed and will be held later this year. Some of the folks who wanted to enter also wanted to race so when we reschedule the Poker Run, it will not compete with a race. Just after the Firecracker fleet returned to the Squadron, the monsoon returned. With lightning over Sarasota and heavy cloud cover over the Squadron, the Relay Race was delayed and ultimately cancelled in favor of safety. That did not stop the shore side activities. Just after dinner, the rain finally made its way across the bay and under the safety of the pavilion families continued to enjoy the family festival and a fabulous band. By Herb Your Race Captain
A very big thank you to Knight Hamalian and Jim Corrigan for pulling off a 24 hour shift and having an absolutely decadent hog ready to serve up by mid afternoon on July 4th. A huge thank you to all the other volunteers who all worked so hard to make July 4th a great success! The day started with lunch on the grill, and perfect weather for the Firecracker 400. The 19ft Wipeout waterslide was a blast and note has been made to use Wipeout again! The Ice cream sales and Snow Cone machine ran all day and there were lots of blue-lipped (blue snow cones) kids running around. Dinner was followed by several hours of wonderful music by Noel, Ducky and Johnny with an interlude for fireworks at 9PM. By Vanessa Your Social Coordinator
