Message from the Commodore

Dear Sarasota Sailing Squadron Member,

If you receive an unsolicited letter in the mail about the need to “Save Our Squadron”, please know this is not official correspondence from the Sarasota Sailing Squadron nor is it endorsed by the Squadron. It is a piece of negative campaign literature, sent regardless of policy that members not use the membership directory information for mass campaigning.

We have worked hard to create appropriate venues for Candidates to present position statements, have dialogue and be available to field your questions and comments.

These venues include the Squadron’s website where you’ll find a tab titled Election Forum containing posts from all candidates.

We also have the Burgee which you should have by now. The October edition is devoted entirely to the Candidates and Ballot Initiatives.

Lastly, there is The Breezy Blast, our twice monthly E Newsletter.

There will also be a “Meet the Candidates Night” at the Squadron on Wednesday November 6th at 7:00PM.

The importance of these communication vehicles is submissions are subject to the Election Judge’s review to insure they do not contain mistruths, accusations, innuendos or rumors some of which have been circulating for years.

However, we are aware of other material being sent to members. In particular, the one using Save Our Squadron letterhead. Without getting in to a lot of detail or picking the letter apart I will say…of those names which appear in support of the statements made…2 are not members, 5 are not “members in good standing” and one contacted the office and said they had no idea how their name became associated with something they do not support.

Sadly, the letter perpetuates negative dialogue and a distortion of facts I find damaging to our organization. It is demoralizing to employees, discourages volunteers and creates a hostile environment at the club. It is also outside the rules set by the election judge in order to ensure a fair election.

It is important to vote for those Candidates you feel are most capable to keep our Club running smoothly but it is also important you are making informed decisions.

I encourage you to do your own research, read the Candidate posts to determine their goals, try to be at Meet the Candidates Night and most of all…ask questions.

And please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to discuss any of the issues. I’ll do my best to share with you what I consider positive and reasonable choices going forward.

The sky is not falling as some would have you believe.

David Jennings, Commodore
