The Sarasota Sailing Squadron will present a talk on 75th anniversary of Melges Performance Sailboats by Andy Burdick on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 6 pm at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron at 1717 Ken Thompson Park on City Island. Parking is required outside the gate to the club and walk in. The public is invited. Cost is $5 with a cash bar. Please RSVP to 941 388-2355.
Andy Burdick will discuss the evolution of this family-owned builder of innovative sailboats in Zenda, Wisconsin. Founder Harry C. ‘Buddy’ Melges, Jr. is the greatest living sailor. He is the only sailor to have won an Olympic Gold and Bronze Medals and an America’s Cup title as well as over 60 major national and international sailing championships in Star, 5.5 Meter, E and A Scows, among others.
Andy is an amazing sailor with two Melges 24 worlds, 30 inland lake championships, and over 40 national and North American championships. He has been particularly involved in expanding Melges into an international company with builders in Europe and Asia. Some of the more famous one-design performance sailboats are: A Scow, E Scow, MC Scow, Melges 20, Melges 24, Melges 32, Melges 40, and Melges IC37.
We look forward in hearing about his successful racing career and how this small company grew into an international presence with strong class organizations such as E and MC scow fleets in Sarasota.
