This is an SOS to ask your assistance to help us to get back the historic Squadron chrome plated starting cannon which was recently sold by mistake. The cannon dates back to the early 1950's when it was used as the starting gun for Squadron races. It featured in a 1953 picture of the Labor Day regatta queen. It is a major part of our history.
The cannon was accidentally sold about a month ago when it was mixed up with a number of miscellaneous items that the SSS was selling in a garage sale. It was sold for $200 to a tall grey haired gentleman wearing a yellow T- shirt and driving a gold or bronze colored van or truck. If you know of someone matching this description, please call club manager Craig Bridges as soon as possible at 941-323-6875. By the way, the purchaser came to the SSS a week or so after he purchased it and tested it by firing a 10 Gauge shotgun blank.
We will pay a premium to get it back and we hope that the purchaser will understand how important this cannon is to the SSS history.
I am writing the History of The Sarasota Sailing Squadron which is about to be published and the cannon features prominently in this history book .
Please help us to do everything possible to return this important artifact to its rightful owner. Pass this message on to everyone that you know at the SSS , the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program, the Luffing Lassies, plus any members of the fleet you sail with.
