Hurricane Preparation

On Land

If you have the ability to relocate your boat to a non-flooded zone outside the Squadron ahead of an approaching hurricane, we strongly recommend doing so. However, if this is not an option, it is critical to properly secure your boat in the yard.

Our experiences during Hurricanes Irma, Ian, Helene, and Milton have shown that boats not properly secured can suffer severe damage and pose a risk to neighboring vessels. Securing your boat isn’t difficult, but waiting until the last minute can be costly—tie-down straps, yacht lines, and other necessary supplies quickly become scarce as a storm approaches.

Please note that the Squadron cannot install tie-down anchors for all land-stored boats. It is the responsibility of each boat owner to ensure their vessel is properly secured with appropriate tie-down anchors, straps, or lines.

Additionally, we strongly recommend removing all sails and any loose gear that could be blown away in high winds. This applies to both land-stored and water-stored boats. If practical, removing roller-furled sails and stepping masts can help reduce wind load and vibration, preventing boats from being rocked off their trailers.

Taking action early can help protect your boat and those around it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our Squadron safe.

General - Boat Liability Insurance

Ensure that your boat's liability insurance is current. Coverage may be included under your homeowner’s policy or a separate marine policy. If you have questions, check with your insurance agent to confirm that your policy covers damage to other people’s property caused by your boat during a wind event. Boat owners are responsible for any damage caused by their vessels.

Boat Relocation & Security
Occasionally, the club must relocate land-based vessels due to facility updates, such as new parking arrangements or road revisions. We encourage all members to regularly check on their boat’s security and location. The club is not responsible for anchors—if they are moved, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure they are properly tied down. Remember, your boat is valuable, and it is stored near other valuable boats—please take care to secure it properly.

Severe Weather Preparations
For best practices on securing your boat on land or at the dock, refer to our Severe Weather and Hurricane Procedures. In the event of severe weather requiring tie-downs for land-secured boats, the club will issue an email notification.

Member Responsibilities
Per SSS Standing Rules, Article 5.3, members are responsible for securing their boats in the event of a Weather Alert. If you plan to be away for an extended period, please ensure your vessel is properly secured beforehand.

For more details, please check the Weather Alert Notification Process.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our club safe and secure!
