Sarasota Sailing Squadron

Hurricane Preparation

On Land

Experience during Hurricanes Irma and Ian showed that boats not securely anchored / tied down can be severely damaged and damage other boats around them. Anchoring / tying down boats down in the yard isn't hard, but if you wait until the last minute, you may find not find needed supplies (tie down straps, yacht line, etc.) since as a hurricane approaches, these become scarce commodities. The Squadron installed tie down anchors in 2018 for all land stored storage spots. Proper tie down straps / lines remain the responsibility of the boat owner.

It is also strongly recommended that you remove all sails and any gear that can be blown away during bad weather (applies to boats on water as well). Removing roller furled sails and stepping masts is recommended where practical to reduce wind load / vibration that can "rock" boats off their trailers.

General

Make sure the Liability on your boat is current. It may be covered under your homeowners policy, or under a separate policy. If you have any questions, please check with your agent to make sure your policy covers damage to other people's property caused by your boat during a wind event. Boat owners are responsible for any damage caused by their boat.

Land based vessels are occasionally relocated due to land use updates such as one way roads, parking area revisions, etc. The Club may need to relocate existing anchors, so you should always check  on the security and current location of your vessel. Contact the office if there are an issue with anchors that have been moved. The most important thing is to not forget that you have expensive property sitting in close proximity to other members expensive property!!

For further details on "Best Practices" for securing your boat on land or at the SSS dock, please see Severe Weather and Hurricane Procedures.

The club will also provide an e-mail notification of severe weather conditions that require tie downs for land secured boats.

See Weather Alert for specifics of the notification process.

The SSS Standing Rules, Article 5.3 specifies club member responsibilities to secure their boats in case of a Weather Alert. Members are reminded that they must secure their boat if they are expected to be away for a significant period of time.
