Letter to Our Members During COVID-19

To Our Members,

I hope you and your loved ones have remained safe and healthy during this extraordinary time. Speaking on behalf of the Board of Directors, your health and well being is our primary concern. With that thought in mind, the Sarasota Sailing Squadron will remain closed until official guidance allows us to re-open. Should you need to visit the squadron, please contact the office at (941) 388-2355 or manager@sarasotasailingsquadron.org.

I have fielded a few questions about recreational boating.  Our legal counsel has carefully reviewed the statewide exemption list. The Miami-Dade County guidelines, which the Governor included in his emergency order, closed all beaches and marinas (both public and private). While an individual may engage in boating as a recreational activity, the operation of a marina is not an “essential service.”  For an analogy, a person may exercise (“essential activity”), but the gyms remain closed.

The Board of Directors is closely monitoring the situation and will communication to members any changes in state or local regulations. Believe me, I understand the need to get back out on the bay and sail with friends. Our squadron is truly a little piece of heaven on earth.

Until we can get together again, please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. I look forward to seeing all of you back out on beautiful Sarasota Bay!

Kindest regards,

Richard Elsishans, Commodore
